Domestic abuse, substance misuse and mental health problems rarely present in isolation (Department for Children Schools and Families, 2010)
Data shows a clear co-occurrence between the ‘toxic trio’ risk factors of domestic abuse, substance misuse (alcohol and/or drugs) and parental mental ill health. Nearly a third of mothers (31%) and a third of fathers (32%) in these families experiencing domestic abuse disclosed either mental health problems, substance misuse, or both. (Safelives 2014)
If experiencing one of these elements, an individual is vulnerable to the others, as a causal or environmental factor.
