Somerset has a lower proportion of residents aged 16-64 qualified to NVQ4 or above than nationally (35.9% compared with 36.9%).
Within the County, Taunton Deane has the highest proportion of residents qualified to NVQ4+ (44.3%) and Sedgemoor has the lowest (28.1%).

5% of Somerset residents aged 16-64 have no qualifications, lower than the Heart of the South West LEP area (5.3%) and lower than national (8.8%). Somerset’s proportion of unqualified residents has been steadily decreasing over several years but showed an increase between 2012 and 2013 (from 4.5% to 5.9%). Within Somerset, West Somerset has the highest proportion of residents with no qualifications (8.8%) and Taunton Deane has the lowest (2.8%).

Participation in job related training has increased slightly in Somerset and across the LEP area between 2014 and 2015.
However, levels of job related training has decreased slightly across UK.

The number of apprenticeships being undertaken across Somerset, England and the Heart of the South West LEP area has increased since 2013/14. In 2014/15, 4890 apprenticeships were started in Somerset, an increase of 16.7% on the previous year. Somerset had the largest rise compared to England and the Heart of South West LEP area which had a rise of 13.7% and 12.7% respectively.

The number of apprenticeship achievements has slowed in recent years. In 2014/2015, 2,640 apprenticeship achievements (or completions) were recorded in Somerset, a fall of 1.9% on the previous year.
