The English Indices of Deprivation, published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), are the official measure of relative deprivation for small areas in England.
The 2019 version is based on 39 separate indicators, organised across seven domains (and sub-domains) of deprivation which are combined, using appropriate weights, to calculate the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). This is an overall measure of multiple deprivation experienced by people living in an area and is calculated for every Lower layer Super Output Area (LSOA), or neighbourhood, in England (32,844 LSOAs). Every such neighbourhood is ranked according to its level of deprivation relative to that of other areas. The data can be used to assess which parts of Somerset face challenges, down to very small geographical areas.
Most indicators in the 2019 Indices of Deprivation relate to the financial year 2015/16. Previous editions of the indices were published in 2010, 2007 and 2004.
