Population Estimates

Each year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) publishes ‘mid-year estimates’ of populations for national and local areas. These are based on Census data, updated with information from a variety of sources. The latest ‘mid-year estimates’ for mid-2024 were published on 30th July 2025.

Key Facts for Somerset

• In mid-2024 the population of Somerset was estimated to be 588,328, a rise of 5,366 from 2023 and 15,228 more than at the 2021 Census. 
• 25% of the Somerset population are aged 65 and over, 2% higher than regionally and 6% higher than nationally.  
• 44% of the population growth in Somerset between 2021 and 2024 has been in the 65 and over age group. 

Age Breakdowns

• The population pyramid below shows that for both male and female sexes the largest age groups are among the older age bands. 
• The age bands with the highest population are 55-59 and 60-64. 
• We traditionally see a thinning of the ‘pyramid’ in the late teens/early 20’s due to people leaving the county to attend University or to work.
