Somerset has a lower proportion of residents aged 16-64 qualified to NVQ4 or above than nationally (33.3% compared with 35.8%). This proportion has increased by 6.8% between 2009 and 2014. Within the County, Taunton Deane has the highest proportion of residents qualified to NVQ4+ (43.1%) and West Somerset has the lowest (14%).

Within Somerset, West Somerset has the highest proportion of residents with no qualifications (17.4%) and Taunton Deane has the lowest (4.2%).

The number of apprenticeships being undertaken across Somerset, England and the Heart of the South West LEP area has dropped. In 2013/14, 4190 apprenticeships were started in Somerset; a decrease of 18.6% on the previous year. Somerset had a larger decrease than England and the Heart of South West LEP area with 13.8% and 15.4% respectively.

The number of apprenticeship achievements has slowed in recent years. In 2013/2014, 2,690 apprenticeship achievements (or completions) were recorded in Somerset, an increase of 1.5% on the previous year.
Apprenticeship achievements in the Heart of the South West LEP area fell by 2.7% between 2013 and 2014.
