Homefinder Somerset is a partnership of local authorities and housing associations working together to make the process of finding a home simple and transparent for all applicants across Somerset. Anyone over the age of 16 and not subject to immigration control, seeking social housing anywhere in Somerset can apply. Depending on their circumstances applicants are placed into one of four bands: Gold, Silver, Bronze, or in a very small number of cases an Emergency band. The criteria against which applications are assessed is published on the Homefinder Somerset website.
A snapshot of the housing register on 31 March 2017 indicates a total of 8,230 applicants. The great majority of applicants require a one or two bedroom property.

Rural-Urban AnalysisMore than two-thirds (69%) of Homefinder applicants live in urban areas (as defined by the 2011 ONS Rural-Urban Classification). More than 7 out of 10 Gold and Emergency Band applicants live in urban areas. By comparison, only just over half (52%) of all Somerset residents live in urban areas.
Table 4: Applicants by Band (as at September 2013)
Note: This table represents a different snapshot in time to the previous tables on this page. The table only includes applicants for which records could be matched to a Somerset postcode. Unrecognised postcodes or those of applicants living outside Somerset are excluded.
Since these figures were published Homefinder Somerset implemented new 'Local Connection Qualification Criteria', which had the effect of reducing the number of eligible applicants. An initial review of the register at the end of 2013 to establish numbers without a local connection estimated that between 500 and 1,000 applicants across all the five Somerset local authorities would be affected by this change. |
86.3% of people living here are very or fairly satisfied with where they live, well above the national average of 78.6% (The Place Survey, 2008).
